Stay Focused

When somebody asks for something , no matter how weird it is , just get it. Even if they asked for ice cream with their steak. Just get it and forget about it. Who cares!

Making a big deal of anything and by that I mean what you are thinking of will just ruin the night. It is what you walk out with that is the most important.

Keep your eye on the ball.

Stay focused.

  1. I find the same approach to be effective. Hell, it's our job to 'server' not critique. Although it's amusing to a degree to grouse about weird people and their requests, I really hate working with waiters who can't come to terms with their job description.

  2. This is very true. One of my bartenders told me a guy ordered a Grey Goose on the rocks the other day. No problem. Then he asked for just one more shot in his glass, not the full amount. A bit odd but certainly doable. My bartender was tipped $5.00. I tell my bartenders that each of our customers has money in their pocket. Their job is to get that money from their pocket into their tip jar. That's the object of this game.To be in this business a person has to have a sincere desire to enjoy entertaining, laughing at corny jokes and putting up with a certain amount of foolishness out of our guests. Many times it all pay$ off in the end. Sometimes all our guests want is someone to pay attention to them when they feel they aren't getting attention anywhere else in their life. And if it puts a bit of money in my pocket at the end of the night by schmoozing with the clientele, then it's all good:)

  3. Chris…couldn't agree with you more. Pretty simple just giving people what they want and getting paid for it.

  4. Waiternotes..well put. The waiters who groan all the time just don't last long.

  5. I really hate working with waiters who can't come to terms with their job description. That's got to be the quote of the century!

  6. Chris…that is a good one isn't it and very true.

  7. I absolutely agree. I mean, I've been serving for ten years! Now, the crazy stuff customers do is, of course, the fodder for my blog. But at work, I'm all focus. I need to make my bill money, period. fterwards I can review my day, complain to my husband and write an entertaining blog post.

  8. The Veteran Server…exactly!

  9. I am so much more grateful to a server that has a "can-do" attitude than one who insists on reciting every company policy regarding that instance that they can to back up the fact that they "can't do" what I've asked. It's the same with hotel front desk agents, where, I am in total agreement with you, that if a guest makes a reasonable request, just make it happen! I really hope newbie waiters and people interested in careers that involve ANY kind of customer service are reading this blog. They could learn a lot from you!

  10. Don…thank you for those kind words. I never really thought my advice was that extraordinary. It is just or should be common sense.Just get the people what they want. It is not too difficult.
